My family history on my Father’s Father’s side begins with William McWaters, born in Cork, Ireland in 1755. He immigrated to South Carolina and lived there for many years before getting married at 60 to Margaret Choctaw Woman. She was a South Carolina native, born in 1755. They had several children, the most important of which being Francis McWaters. William died in 1818 in York, South Carolina.
Francis McWaters was born in 1786 in York, South Carolina. On January 6, 1811, he married Lucy Tally. Lucy’s parents, Henry Tally and Edith Hopkins, lived in York but were born in Virginia and North Carolina, respectively. Lucy was born in 1796 and was married at 14. In 1812, their son James A. McWaters was born. Francis enlisted in the Army during the war of 1812 and left after the war. He died in 1860, with Lucy dying in 1886.
James Alexander McWaters was born in 1812 in York, South Carolina. His son William Pierce McWaters was born in 1841 and he married Rebecca N. Bailey in 1843. She was a 19 year old girl from Georgia. In 1861, James enlisted in the Louisiana Cavalry as a Lieutenant Colonel for the Confederates. He was killed in action in 1862 in Louisiana. Rebecca died shortly after in 1868.

Samuel died in Coffee, Alabama in 1929 but Ellen lived to be 92 years old, dying in 1971.

Johnston and Cora Belle Yates were born in Alabama, along with their parents, William T. Johnston and Anna Elizabeth Brooks and William R. Yates and Mattie V. Yates, respectively. Hubert and Annie remained in Alabama their entire lives and had a child, Talmadge Wayne McWaters, in 1931. Hubert died in 1987 and Annie in 1984.

Mary was born in 1825 in Georgia. Her parents, William Boswell and Stacy Warbington, were also from Georgia. Samuel and Mary had Samuel H. Shannon II in 1859. Samuel died in Mississippi in 1883 and Mary in 1896.
